Steth
oscopes have a way of getting left behind in exam rooms, popping out of labcoat pockets, or causing neckstrain as we keep them wrapped around our collars all day. I wasn’t aware of any alternatives for securing a scope while keeping it easily accessible for use in the clinic, until one day I noticed a resident who had a stethocope clip on the outside of their labcoat pocket. This “clip” was unlike any others that I had seen on the market in that it was made of leather and had a velcro strap which held it in place, making it incredibly easy to use. That evening I went home and did some internet research to find out where I could purchase one and I found the “Bat Clip” on amazon.com.
When I received my new lab coat accessory, I was pleased with its quality. It came with a little piece of paper which gave some background information about it and simple instructions on how to fold your stethoscope before securing it with the velcro straps on the clip. Apparently a physician in Louisiana came up with the original idea for this clip along with one of their patients who is a craftman working with leather. I’ve been using it on my labcoat for almost a year now and have had no problems with it, and better yet haven’t dropped or lost my stethoscope in that time either. I’m not exactly sure why its called the “Bat Clip” (maybe in reference to Batman?), but regardless of whether you are fan of the dark knight or not, you’ll really like this item.
